Good on you for standing your ground. With the amount of money they must be drawing in, you'd think they'd be past trying to get free publicity really!

They charge others to advertise with them after all!

Delurking to say bravo! Many big brands, incl magazines, seem to view bloggers as handmaidens. Of course things aren't helped by certain bloggers who "proudly" display a badge on their blog along the lines of Official Brand X Blogger... and then proceed to try and persuade me that all reviews are honest. One reason I really like your blog is that it's above all this - it's honest, impartial and trustworthy. So thank you:) I really enjoy reading your posts.

I had no idea that some bloggers are official brand x bloggers ...hmmmmm

One of the reasons I write and enjoy my blog is that I love trying all beauty products and such is the vast array of choice, it will take me my lifetime to do it :-)

I completely agree that there should be some reciprocation, although I might not respect this blog as much if I knew you were outright paid to promote something. A link exchange would be ideal... you could do a write-up on the freebie and they could do a brief feature saying check xyz blog for more information. Everyone wins!

Just like you I'm really surprised by this. I got an email from a magazine asking me to write an article about their article (...), and link to them. I didn't respond immediately and the next day they already sent a followup. I replied with a polite email that I wasn't interested because a) I couldn't write about their article because I'm not supportive of the brands they wrote about and b) that l don't just post advertisements like that. Surprise, surprise, I never heard back either.. I'm not sure what they're thinking!!

I'm so glad you did that! It's preposterous for them to expect such a one sided arrangement would be acceptable to you (or any other blogger, for that matter). I agree with "my lips but better"... you were absolutely right to ask for a mutually beneficial link exchange or "barter", if you will.
