He really is very lovely. I had a similar chance to meet him and check out his office a few years back for a men's fragrance launch and he was genuinely charming - friendly, funny and extremely down to earth. What do you think of the men's fragrance, though? Of the two the women's is the better. And I say that as a man!
Wow, I love this man. And his peanut nativity set! But I disagree that getting healthier looking models is all up to the agencies, it seems to me that the agencies hire and encourage extreme thinness because they think that's what designers want (and I'm sure some of them do). So really they need to meet in the middle. Designers need to make it clear that they want models with a little more meat on their bones and agencies need to come through.
And as for Paul Smith not doing a high street line, perhaps his concern is about losing creative control or compromising on quality. I imagine it's easy to feel bullied by giant corporations like Target, H&M, etc.
Lovely post Jane, had the chance to work with him when I did the shows and you're right, he is the nicest man! Once again well written, funny and light to read. Thanks! x
Hmm, he's being a little disingenuous about model sizes because surely the agencies supply the models that fit in the sample sizes, not the other way round. But otherwise, he does sound very nice and grounded.
Great piece J such a refreshing way to launch a new fragrance he really is a national treasure. Since it is the Chinese Year of the Rabbit and the Easter Bunny is on his way, I suspect this could be quite a success for him!
I can't believe Paul Smith showed you his knickers! Love the sound of the scent - and love the pics of his crazy office (how can he think straight in there?)
I loved this interview. That office is incredible - It's so sweet that he uses everything to decorate. I'll be quite interested to give this a sniff now - based on the clothes I have a really clear idea of what I'd expect it to smell like!
I'm sad about Paul Smith - the co, not the name. I've always supported them editorially, their media agency book Paul Smith ads on their site, but since I've been LLG, the PR won't return my calls, gave me a pointless seat behind a pillar at in the final row last season where all I cld see were heads, & refused me a ticket this season. (Not even for Mercedes, let alone LLG.)
The irony is that I was interviewed at last season's show for Grazia TV about how much I love the house.(That's before I discovered my pointless seat, mind you!) *sighs* LLGxx
I interned at Paul Smith a few years ago and have to say that him and all his staff were lovely and welcoming - it's quite rare for such a successful designer to still take such a hands-on approach with their label.
I love all the fragrances so look forward to trying this one x

Great post. I'd heard before that he's lovely, and it really does sound like it! And you know what? It truly makes me want to try the fragrance now...
