Haha I can't believe you managed to get that far without any gel! When I first started using Boots Smooth Skin last year, I thought that the gel was for some kind of "conductive" purpose. But I soon realised that it was just to cool down the skin to stop it smarting so much with the zaps. And I realised that reapplying a thick layer during the sessions really helps to reduce the intensity of the "twangs".
I really wonder what the next generation of Boots Smooth Skin will be like. I also wonder whether it will be ages away, because it looks like they're only now doing a massive PR push on the current version. Or maybe the current push is just a quick solution to fight back against the Philips Lumea buzz.
By the way, we briefly crossed paths at the Le Métier event at Liberty last Thurs - it was really nice to meet you. I was the one marvelling at your lash extensions just before you left.
I thought that gel is needed for Boots Smooth Skin IPL device not only to cool the skin, but also to cool the device's light emission window as well, so the glass does not overheat and break.
I have the Smooth Skin, but I have only been using it for 2 weeks, so I can't comment on how well it is working yet! The key thing for me when I was deciding between this and the Phillips version, was that Smooth Skin is permanent hair removal whereas the Phillips one only slows growth. I wouldn't be willing to put in all this work etc if it was just going to slow the growth. I want it gone for good. We'll see in another few weeks if it was money well spent ;)
Hi Anon.. a year on, and after sporadic (very) use of Smooth Skin I would say I definitely have less hair on my legs than I used to - particularly over shins, but hair still grows. I have to admit though that I did not follow up very thoroughly. As for Lumea, the hair under my arms still grows as it ever did. Given that I didn't have a machine for home use, I'd expect that as I wasn't able to do follow up treatments.

Really useful! which of the two products would you recommend for legs? i see smooth skin has a £50 discount...
